Killer 7 interview

IGN: You announced that you would bring Killer 7 to PS2 in Japan and Europe. Why are there no announced plans to release a PS2 build in the US?

Hiroyuki Kobayashi: For Killer 7 release's in the US, it's not confirmed yet, but we would like to make some kind of announcement in the next couple of months. We're trying our best to make that announcement soon.

IGN: Was a US version of the PS2 build postponed due to an agreement with Nintendo?

Kobayashi: No, it's not exclusive. We will. I'm pretty sure you guys know the reasons that we haven't announced it yet. In the US the GameCube is a kiddy platform so it might be difficult for a title like Killer 7, which is appealing to mature players, to succeed on that platform alone. That's why we're thinking about releasing it on PlayStation 2, too. Of course, if more mature US customers purchase the GameCube version then we might have to just concentrate on GameCube and forget about the PlayStation 2. But that's not going to happen.

IGN: Killer 7 is a very intriguing game. But we still don't have any idea how to play it. Can you fill us in? We know the concept, but how do you control your character?

Kobayashi: [Laughs] The director of Killer 7, Mr. Suda -- it's his concept and his idea. Neither Mikami nor myself have any idea what is going on in this guy's mind. [Laughs] It's totally untraceable. The idea is just so original and so unique. That's what this entire concept is really based upon. You have to understand that even the gameplay has been awkward and complicated. Because Mr. Suda is that kind of person, both Mikami and I are both saying, "Okay, we have to deal with this. That means that's going to take a lot of time for us to come up with the gameplay schemes and everything."

IGN: So do you control a character in third-person? And do you also shoot at zombie-like creatures in first-person?

Kobayashi: The adventure part is more of a third-person and the shooting is very first-person. When you move around and stuff it will be in third-person.

IGN: In videos we've seen, it doesn't appear as if you have precise control of your character. Rather, you seem to choose branching paths for him and he automatically walks them. Is this how control works?

Kobayashi: I can't really tell you the details of the controls, but you cannot really go to where you want to go. It's pretty much all set.

IGN: When you're working on games like Resident Evil 4 and Killer 7, do you ever fear that one of your co-workers may snap and wipe out the entire office?

Kobayashi: [Laughs] We are not very violent people. Some of the guys really like dung beetles. Some like martial arts. They have interesting hobbies, but they are focused and they know that they are in the real world.
